Biography

Alvaro Torres is considered one of the most famous Salvadorian singers internationally. Although he became famous while living in Guatemala, it was in his homeland, along the Lempa River, where he discovered his talent for singing.  The first song Alvaro wrote was titled "Sweet Amiga" and was composed at 12 years old.  It was inspired by a childhood friend that allowed him to watch television at her home. Thereafter, she became the main source of inspiration for the romantic singer.


His parents, Maria del Carmen Torres and Jose Ibarra Germain, separated when he was only two years old. In-spite of not having been raised with his father, a violinist, Alvaro’s inherited his talent and passion for music. In the early 70's, Alvaro, an accomplice of love, began his musical career serenading the lovers in his native El Salvador. In 1975 he immigrated to Guatemala in search of new opportunities, and succeeded. He began singing at restaurants and clubs in Guatemala, which became his new home for the following 10 years.


That year Pepe Rodas, director of Radio Corporation, and Alvaro met at one of the restaurants where he sang and invited him to the studio to record a demo that would change the course of his life. While in school, Rodas gave him an instrumental album, Orchestra Franck Pourcel, and lyrics he had written for it. He asked Alvaro to sing the lyrics he had written, and thus record a demo for presentation to the record label Discos Latin America (DILA).


A few weeks later, Alvaro and Rodas were granted an interview with the president of DILA, Augusto Duran Dias, where they signed their first record deal.  That December, he began recording his first studio album titled "Something Special," which stations across the country began to play. 


Later Alvaro participated in various singing competitions such as Festibuga, held in Colombia in 1976; La Voz y La Canción, in San Juan Puerto Rico in 1977; and OTI, in Chile in 1979, among others.  While living in Guatemala, Alvaro recorded his first album titled "Acaríciame", "That hurts," "Of what good does Love Do" and "Angel of Tenderness". In 1983 Alvaro immigrated to the United States. He went directly to Denver, Colorado, and while he recorded in 1984 the production "without strings".


He spent a year between Houston and San Antonio, Texas, and in 1986 he then moved to Los Angeles, California. From there, recorded his seventh album titled "Three", a production which was enshrined as one of the best singers and composers of his generation.  From this album came great hits like "From end to end" and "My love for you", a song performed in duet with singer Marisela.


He lived in Los Angeles for ten years, in which he recorded "More romantic songs than anybody else" (1987), "If you were me" (1989) and "Nothing compares to you" (1991), considered to date one of his most acclaimed production.  Besides the theme "Nothing compares to you", the title to this album, the song is also "good friends", to be used for the international launch of the late singer Selena, with great success.


From its beginnings to the present, Alvaro has remained in force in the music scene with productions that highlight not only his prodigious voice, but his gift for writing songs that come straight to the heart.  In the early 90's recorded "Tribute to Mexico" (1992), "Amor del alma" (1993), "Reencuentro" (1995), "The Pleasure Seekers" (1996) and "The Last Romantic" (1998).  In mid-1996 Alvaro Torres moved to Miami, Florida, where he currently resides. From the City of the Sun has released their newest productions as "Loving Life" (2000), "Bad Used" (2002), "Alvaro Torres plays Juan Gabriel boleros" (2005), and "The new and the better "(2007).


Throughout his career he has recorded a total of 21 albums, of which have left many successes, which were later performed by great artists such as José Luis Rodríguez "El Puma", Eddy Santiago, Tito Nieves, Sergio Vargas, Rocio Jurado and Paloma San Basilio, among others. Besides having played memorable duets with Selena, Marisela, Jose Feliciano, Monchy and Alexandra, among others, has written songs for great singers as unpublished Maria Sorte, Paloma San Basilio, Rocio Jurado, Dulce y Verónica Castro.


Through its beautiful compositions Alvaro has not only gained the appreciation and admiration of his audience, but also recognition of the music industry, which has earned multiple Gold and Platinum records, and the prize for best Composer of the Year in 1993 by BMI.


But not everything has been victory for Alvaro Torres. In 2008 the singer suffered a car accident that almost cost him his life.  The musician had returned to his homeland to record a television program on top of a mountain in El Salvador. As they descended from four thousand feet into the valley, the pickup truck he was traveling in with three companions lost its brakes. Unfortunately fell into an abyss 500 meters deep and although Alvaro miraculously had no fracture, two of his companions were seriously injured and unfortunately the other companion was killed instantly.  At the bottom of the abyss this singer confessed that he had emerged unharmed from the tragic accident, because God had a new plan for your life. That's why, the titled of his latest production "Very Personal", because according to him, that's the way God is working in his life.


The album was released in October, 2009 and also contain seven songs completely dedicated to Jesus Christ love, it also has four themes of social, humanitarian and fraternal messages.  On his conversion to Christianity, Alvaro Torres says He will continue singing to love and lost love, two feelings that have inspired him to write some of the most romantic songs ever written in the history of Spanish music.
